In value terms, semiconductor LED production reduced rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +34.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Exports in Asia
For the fifth consecutive year, Asia recorded growth in shipments abroad of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs), which increased by 29% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 163% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, semiconductor LED exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Thailand was the main exporting country with an export of around X units, which amounted to 60% of total exports. It was distantly followed by China (X units), constituting a 36% share of total exports. Japan (X units) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +132.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest semiconductor LED supplier in Asia, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports.
In China, semiconductor LED exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price faced a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 1.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while China stood at $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-7.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia
In 2021, approx. X units of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) were imported in Asia; increasing by 16% against the previous year. In general, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 317%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, semiconductor LED imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Thailand prevails in imports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 72% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by India (X units) and Japan (X units), together generating a 14% share of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X units) held a little share of total imports.
Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) imports, with a CAGR of +75.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hong Kong SAR (+38.5%), India (+32.7%) and Japan (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Thailand (+64 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of India (-3.2 p.p.) and Japan (-33.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), India ($X) and Japan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 37% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, India, with a CAGR of +19.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a significant decrease. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while Japan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-10.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
