In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Asian shipping market, when its value decreased by -13.5% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a notable increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Shipping Production in Asia
In value terms, shipping production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a moderate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Shipping Exports
Exports in Asia
Shipping exports skyrocketed to X units in 2021, picking up by 72% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 291%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, shipping exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -18.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 114%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from India (X units), Kazakhstan (X units), Turkey (X units), China (X units) and Bangladesh (X units), together amounting to 73% of total export. Singapore (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Saudi Arabia (X units). All these countries together held near 10% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +78.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), China ($X) and India ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 67% share of total exports.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +65.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -34.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 226%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while Kazakhstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+43.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia
Shipping imports surged to X units in 2021, increasing by 64% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 6,914%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, shipping imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Armenia represented the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X units) and Kuwait (X units), together committing a 28% share of total imports. India (X units), Timor-Leste (X units), Mongolia (X units), Singapore (X units) and Pakistan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Armenia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of ships, vessels, ferry-boats for the transport of persons. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+74.4%), Pakistan (+43.9%), Kuwait (+34.7%), Singapore (+29.7%) and India (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +74.4% from 2012-2021. Timor-Leste experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mongolia (-36.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Armenia (+48 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (+17 p.p.), Kuwait (+10 p.p.), India (+3.5 p.p.), Timor-Leste (+2.9 p.p.), Singapore (+2.6 p.p.) and Pakistan (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mongolia saw its share reduced by -17.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ships, vessels, ferry-boats for the transport of persons in Asia, comprising 24% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with a 5.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Timor-Leste, with a 2.4% share.
In India, shipping imports declined by an average annual rate of -10.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (+60.8% per year) and Timor-Leste (+61.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -29.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 16,640% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while Armenia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
