The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +20.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. In 2021, China (X tons) represented the major exporter of silicones (in primary forms), constituting 54% of total exports. Japan (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (12%) and South Korea (6.5%). India (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +16.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+78.5%), Thailand (+6.8%), India (+6.6%) and Japan (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +78.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Korea (-1.8%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.6%) and Hong Kong SAR (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+27 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Taiwan (Chinese), Hong Kong SAR, Japan and South Korea saw its share reduced by -2.5%, -7.4%, -8% and -8.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 78% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan (Chinese), India and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 17%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +67.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
