Silk-Worm Cocoons Market Size in Asia

The Asian silk-worm cocoons market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -1.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a pronounced contraction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Silk-Worm Cocoons Production in Asia

In value terms, silk-worm cocoons production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were India (X tons), China (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), together comprising 94% of total production. These countries were followed by Vietnam, which accounted for a further 3.6%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +7.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

Exports in Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of silk-worm cocoons (reelable) were exported in Asia; waning by -14.3% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 272%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, silk-worm cocoons exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 222%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Myanmar was the main exporter of silk-worm cocoons (reelable) in Asia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 49% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and China (X tons), together comprising a 41% share of total exports. The following exporters - Turkey (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) - together made up 7.1% of total exports.

Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the silk-worm cocoons (reelable) exports, with a CAGR of +43.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+34.2%), Tajikistan (+9.9%) and China (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Turkey (-10.7%) and Azerbaijan (-50.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Myanmar (+49 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+9.2 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-5.4 p.p.), Tajikistan (-6.2 p.p.) and Turkey (-34 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) emerged as the largest silk-worm cocoons supplier in Asia, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Tajikistan, with a 14% share.

In Myanmar, silk-worm cocoons exports increased at an average annual rate of +56.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+8.7% per year) and Tajikistan (+9.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+20.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia

For the fourth year in a row, Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of silk-worm cocoons (reelable), which increased by 12% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, silk-worm cocoons imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded significant growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) represented the main importer of silk-worm cocoons (reelable), committing 72% of total imports. Iran (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Kazakhstan (8.4%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to silk-worm cocoons imports into China stood at +36.4%. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+54.8%) and Iran (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +54.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China and Kazakhstan increased by +56 and +7.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported silk-worm cocoons (reelable) in Asia, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iran ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +51.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (+6.2% per year) and Kazakhstan (+27.3% per year).

In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 108% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
