Japan (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented roughly 34% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Israel (X tons), Bahrain (X tons), South Korea (X tons), China (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together generating a 38% share of total imports. Turkey (X tons), Iraq (X tons), India (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Pakistan (with a CAGR of +40.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Japan ($X) and Israel ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 70% share of total imports. China, Malaysia, South Korea, Bahrain, Turkey, Iraq, Qatar, Pakistan, Cyprus and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
India, with a CAGR of +43.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -9.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, slate import price decreased by -10.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
