Sorghum Market Size in Asia
In 2022, the Asian sorghum market increased by 9.2% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. Sorghum Production in Asia

The total production indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -4.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were India (X tons), China (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons), together accounting for 92% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +1.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.
In 2022, the average sorghum yield in Asia shrank to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -3.2% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 17%. Over the period under review, the sorghum yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of sorghum production in Asia was estimated at X ha, with an increase of 2.5% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to sorghum production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the amount of sorghum exported in Asia shrank to X tons, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 119% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sorghum exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons) represented the largest exporter of sorghum, comprising 57% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Myanmar (9.4%) and China (5.1%). Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from India decreased at an average annual rate of -12.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+180.0%), Turkey (+150.2%) and Myanmar (+23.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +180.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, China (-20.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+23 p.p.), Myanmar (+9.4 p.p.) and Thailand (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-14.8 p.p.) and India (-22.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest sorghum supplier in Asia, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with an 11% share.
In India, sorghum exports decreased by an average annual rate of -9.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+114.4% per year) and China (-15.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -2.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of sorghum increased by 7% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 280%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sorghum imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 280% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
China prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total imports in 2022. Japan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sorghum imports, with a CAGR of +63.6% from 2012 to 2022. Japan (-16.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+92 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Japan (-78.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sorghum in Asia, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 2.6% share of total imports.
In China, sorghum imports increased at an average annual rate of +66.2% over the period from 2012-2022.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sorghum import price increased by +77.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China amounted to $X per ton.
