Spinach Production in Asia

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +21.8% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of spinach production, comprising approx. 97% of total volume.
In China, spinach production expanded at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012-2022.
In 2022, the average yield of spinach in Asia contracted to X tons per ha, which is down by -1.7% against 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the spinach yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, approx. X ha of spinach were harvested in Asia; remaining stable against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports in Asia
In 2022, spinach exports in Asia amounted to X tons, flattening at 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 35%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, spinach exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Malaysia (X tons) and China (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together making up 93% of total exports. The following exporters - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) - each finished at a 4.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +19.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest spinach supplier in Asia, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Azerbaijan, with a 1.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +15.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+3.1% per year) and Azerbaijan (+17.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+15.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of spinach decreased by -4.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, spinach imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +17.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Singapore prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 71% of total imports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.6% share, followed by Malaysia (7.2%). The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Macao SAR (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of spinach. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+8.7%) and Malaysia (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +8.7% from 2012-2022. Macao SAR experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+4.3 p.p.), Malaysia (+4.1 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spinach in Asia, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 13% share.
In Singapore, spinach imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United Arab Emirates (+14.4% per year) and Malaysia (+15.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 8.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, spinach import price increased by +88.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 41% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Macao SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
