The Asian strawberry market stood at $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 23% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
China (X tons) remains the largest strawberry producing country in Asia, comprising approx. 74% of total volume. Moreover, strawberry production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Korea (X tons), with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China stood at +4.2%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Turkey (+5.6% per year) and South Korea (-0.7% per year).
In 2022, the average yield of strawberries in Asia amounted to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 2.7%. Over the period under review, the strawberry yield attained the peak level in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the strawberry harvested area in Asia shrank to X ha, waning by -2.2% on the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 9.9%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of strawberries decreased by -5.7% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 62%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, strawberry exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Turkey represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 56% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and China (X tons), together committing a 29% share of total exports. Japan (X tons), Armenia (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+102.6%), Armenia (+56.8%), Japan (+36.8%), China (+15.8%), South Korea (+5.7%) and Kyrgyzstan (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +102.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Japan and China increased by +17, +3.4, +3.3 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Korea ($X), Japan ($X) and Turkey ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 68% share of total exports. Azerbaijan, Armenia, China and Kyrgyzstan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.
Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +101.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Armenia (+11.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia
In 2022, imports of strawberries in Asia fell remarkably to X tons, which is down by -31.7% on the previous year. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -33.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 24%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, strawberry imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +88.3% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 15%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Japan (X tons), Georgia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Oman (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) was the major importer of strawberries in Asia, mixing up 88% of total import.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Syrian Arab Republic (with a CAGR of +49.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported strawberries in Asia, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Hong Kong SAR amounted to +8.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+1.0% per year) and Singapore (+5.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 30% against the previous year. Import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, strawberry import price increased by +60.8% against 2015 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
