In value terms, sunflower seed exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 26%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the key exporters of sunflower seed in 2022, amounting to near 48% and 38% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), achieving a 12% share of total exports.

In value terms, sunflower seed imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
China was the key importer of sunflower seed in Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 57% of total imports in 2022. Turkey (X tons) held a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (4.5%). The following importers - Uzbekistan (X tons) and Iraq (X tons) - together made up 6% of total imports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sunflower seed imports, with a CAGR of +90.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+23.0%) and Iraq (+22.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan increased by +57, +3.7 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively. In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sunflower seed in Asia, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with an 8.9% share.
In Turkey, sunflower seed imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+21.5% per year) and China (+12.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt downturn.
