The Asian toilet paper market rose slightly to $X in 2021, surging by 5% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -3.5% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, toilet paper production rose significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -5.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 17%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of toilet paper decreased by -19.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
In value terms, toilet paper exports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -36.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
China represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 50% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Jordan (X tons), together mixing up a 35% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of toilet paper. At the same time, Turkey (+16.2%), Vietnam (+11.6%), the United Arab Emirates (+3.3%) and Jordan (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +16.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.1%), Indonesia (-1.2%) and Saudi Arabia (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+11 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Malaysia (-1.9 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (-3.3 p.p.) and China (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest toilet paper supplier in Asia, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 5.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +6.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+15.7% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -16.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, toilet paper export price decreased by -32.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Jordan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia
In 2021, the amount of toilet paper imported in Asia reduced to X tons, with a decrease of -12.4% on 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, toilet paper imports fell to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 12%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the key importers of toilet paper in 2021, recording approx. 27% and 21% of total imports, respectively. Japan (X tons) held a 9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (6.6%), Singapore (4.8%) and Thailand (4.5%). The following importers - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Israel (X tons), Georgia (X tons), Macao SAR (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons) - each amounted to a 9.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Israel (with a CAGR of +42.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 54% of total imports. These countries were followed by Singapore, Kazakhstan, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Israel, Cyprus, Georgia and Macao SAR, which together accounted for a further 25%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Israel, with a CAGR of +40.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 1.8%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
