Tomato Market Size in Asia

After three years of growth, the Asian tomato market decreased by -4.2% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by +1.0% against 2016 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Tomato Production in Asia

In value terms, tomato production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -0.6% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

The country with the largest volume of tomato production was China (X tons), comprising approx. 56% of total volume. Moreover, tomato production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (X tons), threefold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 11% share.

In China, tomato production increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+0.7% per year) and Turkey (+1.5% per year).

The average tomato yield fell modestly to X tons per ha in 2021, standing approx. at 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 5.1%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020, and then dropped in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The tomato harvested area declined slightly to X ha in 2021, approximately equating the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 2.9%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the sixth year in a row, Asia recorded growth in shipments abroad of tomatoes, which increased by 10% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +32.7% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, tomato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +67.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons), distantly followed by Afghanistan (X tons), China (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) represented the main exporters of tomatoes, together committing 83% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Iran (with a CAGR of +65.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest tomato supplying countries in Asia were China ($X), Turkey ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X), together comprising 64% of total exports. Jordan, Syrian Arab Republic, Iran and Afghanistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Iran, with a CAGR of +56.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 9.9%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+14.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tomato Imports

Imports in Asia

In 2021, the amount of tomatoes imported in Asia rose to X tons, growing by 3.7% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Pakistan (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) were the major importers of tomatoes in Asia, together generating 56% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), generating a 10% share of total imports. Qatar (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), Oman (X tons), Singapore (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons), Bahrain (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Kyrgyzstan (with a CAGR of +58.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomatoes in Asia, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Pakistan ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Saudi Arabia stood at +9.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (-7.1% per year) and Singapore (+4.5% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 11%.
