The Asian toothpaste market shrank to $X in 2021, declining by -2.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, toothpaste exports stood at $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +63.4% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

China was the key exporter of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices in Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 54% of total exports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by India (6.7%). The following exporters - Japan (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - together made up 14% of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Japan (+34.2%), South Korea (+12.8%), India (+5.0%), the United Arab Emirates (+4.8%) and Thailand (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +34.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Vietnam (-1.4%) and Indonesia (-6.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+11 p.p.) and Japan (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Vietnam (-2.4 p.p.), Indonesia (-4 p.p.) and Thailand (-4.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), Thailand ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 69% share of total exports.

Japan, with a CAGR of +23.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 9.9% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The purchases of the eight major importers of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices, namely the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates, China, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia, Turkey and South Korea, represented more than half of total import. Kuwait (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Israel (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of +17.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), the Philippines ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 30% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 11%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
