Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, preserved tuna exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Thailand represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 57% of total exports. China (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by the Philippines (10%), Indonesia (7.9%) and Vietnam (6.8%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved tuna exports from Thailand stood at -1.9%. At the same time, China (+10.1%) and Vietnam (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +10.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.1%) and the Philippines (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+9.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -9.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest preserved tuna supplier in Asia, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand stood at -3.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+9.4% per year) and the Philippines (+1.4% per year).

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 15%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of tuna (prepared or preserved) decreased by -5% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 12%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, preserved tuna imports fell to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Japan (X tons), distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Israel (X tons) were the largest importers of tuna (prepared or preserved), together generating 74% of total imports. The following importers - the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Jordan (X tons), Oman (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Yemen (with a CAGR of +14.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest preserved tuna importing markets in Asia were Japan ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Yemen ($X), with a combined 55% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Yemen, with a CAGR of +11.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
