Unvulcanised Rubber Market Size in Asia

The Asian unvulcanised rubber market expanded rapidly to $X in 2021, picking up by 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a slight decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unvulcanised rubber production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 15%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of unvulcanised rubber were exported in Asia; jumping by 18% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unvulcanised rubber exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 37% of total exports. Japan (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (13%), South Korea (12%), Indonesia (9%), China (5.5%) and Turkey (5.3%).

Exports from Thailand decreased at an average annual rate of -5.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, China (+16.8%), Malaysia (+11.1%), South Korea (+6.3%), Turkey (+5.8%) and Japan (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +16.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+7.8 p.p.), South Korea (+5 p.p.), China (+4.2 p.p.), Japan (+3.4 p.p.) and Turkey (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -24.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 68% share of total exports. Malaysia, Indonesia, China and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

Among the main exporting countries, China, with a CAGR of +12.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, the amount of unvulcanised rubber imported in Asia expanded sharply to X tons, picking up by 13% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

India (X tons) and China (X tons) were the key importers of unvulcanised rubber in 2021, reaching approx. 28% and 26% of total imports, respectively. Turkey (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Vietnam (9.6%) and Thailand (6.7%). The following importers - Indonesia (X tons) and Japan (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +31.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 67% share of total imports.

India, with a CAGR of +25.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
