Wallpaper Market Size in Asia
In 2021, the Asian wallpaper market increased by 8.9% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Wallpaper Production in Asia
In value terms, wallpaper production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.
Wallpaper Exports
Exports in Asia
Wallpaper exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, increasing by 17% compared with 2020. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +62.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, wallpaper exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -6.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 42%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), mixing up an 8.2% share of total exports. Turkey (X tons) and Japan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wallpaper and wall coverings exports, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkey (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Japan (-3.6%) and South Korea (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+30 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Japan and South Korea saw its share reduced by -2.7% and -21.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest wallpaper supplier in Asia, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 7.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 3.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +10.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (-7.6% per year) and Turkey (+2.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Wallpaper Imports
Imports in Asia
Wallpaper imports rose remarkably to X tons in 2021, growing by 15% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wallpaper imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the six major importers of wallpaper and wall coverings, namely Kazakhstan, India, Uzbekistan, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan, represented more than half of total import. Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Iraq (X tons), China (X tons) and Georgia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +22.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 36% of total imports. India, Azerbaijan, Iran, China, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Georgia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +28.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+18.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
