Walnut Market Size in Asia

After two years of growth, the Asian walnut market decreased by -0.6% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +6.0% against 2018 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Walnut Production in Asia

In value terms, walnut production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

China (X tons) remains the largest walnut producing country in Asia, accounting for 59% of total volume. Moreover, walnut production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Iran (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China totaled +4.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Iran (+2.0% per year) and Turkey (+1.3% per year).

In 2021, the average walnut yield in Asia stood at X tons per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The yield indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, walnut yield decreased by -7.8% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the walnut yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The walnut harvested area fell to X ha in 2021, with a decrease of -5.1% against 2020. In general, the harvested area saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to walnut production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Asia

Walnut exports surged to X tons in 2021, picking up by 33% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 186%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, walnut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 149% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China was the major exporter of walnuts in Asia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), making up an 11% share of total exports. The following exporters - Kyrgyzstan (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Iran (X tons) - each finished at a 5.7% share of total exports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the walnuts exports, with a CAGR of +150.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkey (+78.0%), the United Arab Emirates (+57.6%), Kyrgyzstan (+17.0%) and Iran (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates increased by +81, +11 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest walnut supplier in Asia, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 1.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +153.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+66.7% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+52.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -6.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, walnut export price decreased by -33.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 34%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia

Walnut imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, picking up by 33% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, walnut imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -8.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 44%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons), distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), India (X tons), Iran (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) were the main importers of walnuts, together achieving 85% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in India (with a CAGR of +98.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 63% of total imports.

India, with a CAGR of +96.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -9.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 21%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iraq (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
