Watermelon Market Size in Asia

The Asian watermelon market fell slightly to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Watermelon Production in Asia

In value terms, watermelon production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 55%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of watermelon production, comprising approx. 75% of total volume. Moreover, watermelon production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), more than tenfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 4% share.

In China, watermelon production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (-1.4% per year) and India (+6.4% per year).

The average watermelon yield contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, flattening at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 2.7%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of watermelons production in Asia was estimated at X ha, flattening at 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1.1%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to watermelon production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of watermelons increased by 1% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, watermelon exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Iran was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 31% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic (9.9%), Vietnam (8.4%), Myanmar (8.3%), Uzbekistan (7.9%) and China (5.6%). Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to watermelon exports from Iran stood at +10.7%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+161.2%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+68.0%), Turkey (+17.9%) and Myanmar (+14.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +161.2% from 2012-2022. China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-2.4%) and Vietnam (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Iran (+11 p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+9.8 p.p.), Turkey (+8.3 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+7.9 p.p.) and Myanmar (+4.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-4.5 p.p.), Malaysia (-4.9 p.p.) and Vietnam (-25 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest watermelon supplying countries in Asia were China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Iran ($X), with a combined 45% share of total exports. Turkey, Myanmar, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Uzbekistan and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +173.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 25%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of watermelons, when their volume increased by 11% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, watermelon imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Oman (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Georgia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) represented roughly 84% of total imports in 2022. Nepal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kuwait ($X), Singapore ($X) and Bahrain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 32% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, China, Kazakhstan, Oman, Iraq, Georgia and Nepal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 46%.

Among the main importing countries, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +36.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 34% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
