Wheat Market Size in Asia

The Asian wheat market declined slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -1.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Wheat Production in Asia

In value terms, wheat production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a slight slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 38%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (X tons), India (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons), with a combined 79% share of total production. Turkey, Kazakhstan, Iran and Uzbekistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +2.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of wheat in Asia amounted to X tons per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 2.8% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the wheat yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Exports in Asia

For the third year in a row, Asia recorded growth in shipments abroad of wheat, which increased by 12% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports saw a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wheat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 114%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

India (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together creating 94% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +13.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 96% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +17.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of wheat decreased by -2.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, wheat imports amounted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +93.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the twelve major importers of wheat, namely Indonesia, China, Turkey, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Yemen, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +25.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), China ($X) and Turkey ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 39% of total imports. The Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Pakistan, Yemen, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.

Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +35.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 17% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 19%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+18.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
