The Asian women knitwear market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, women knitwear production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X units of women's or girls' clothing (knitted or crocheted) were exported in Asia; almost unchanged from the previous year. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +107.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, women knitwear exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) was the major exporter of women's or girls' clothing (knitted or crocheted), committing 51% of total exports. Bangladesh (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Vietnam (8.4%) and Cambodia (5.7%). The following exporters - Turkey (X units), India (X units) and Indonesia (X units) - together made up 7.1% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to women knitwear exports from China stood at -2.4%. At the same time, Bangladesh (+30.8%), Indonesia (+17.2%), Vietnam (+10.8%), Cambodia (+8.1%), India (+4.4%) and Turkey (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +30.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Bangladesh (+20 p.p.), Vietnam (+4.6 p.p.) and Cambodia (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-30 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest women knitwear supplier in Asia, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bangladesh ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at -3.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bangladesh (+29.9% per year) and Vietnam (+12.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per unit, surging by 6.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 28%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while Bangladesh ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, approx. X units of women's or girls' clothing (knitted or crocheted) were imported in Asia; growing by 19% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, women knitwear imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X units) and Japan (X units) represented roughly 36% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X units), Iraq (X units), South Korea (X units) and Singapore (X units), together achieving a 29% share of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X units), Yemen (X units), Indonesia (X units), Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), China (X units), Thailand (X units) and Israel (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +33.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest women knitwear importing markets in Asia were Japan ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 42% share of total imports. Vietnam, South Korea, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Taiwan (Chinese), Singapore, Israel, Iraq, Yemen and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of +27.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 22%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while Iraq ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
