For the fifth year in a row, the Asian worked slate market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 19% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption posted prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, worked slate production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +43.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports in Asia

In 2022, the amount of worked slate exported in Asia reduced to X tons, waning by -9.7% on 2021. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 15%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, worked slate exports rose significantly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), constituting a 6% share of total exports.

Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -4.2% from 2012 to 2022. India (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India increased by +1.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest worked slate supplier in Asia, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 8.9% share of total exports.

In China, worked slate exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Export price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, worked slate export price increased by +80.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while China amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in Asia

Worked slate imports expanded markedly to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 12% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, worked slate imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 55%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Korea (X tons) was the key importer of worked slate, creating 28% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), Japan (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons), together constituting a 45% share of total imports. The following importers - Turkey (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

Imports into South Korea increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Afghanistan (+80.9%), the Philippines (+12.6%), Turkey (+8.7%), Thailand (+3.3%) and Cyprus (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Afghanistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +80.9% from 2012-2022. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Iraq (-4.1%), Japan (-7.7%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-10.3%), the United Arab Emirates (-13.0%), Oman (-13.5%) and Qatar (-21.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Korea, the Philippines, Afghanistan, Thailand, Turkey and Cyprus increased by +21, +8.6, +4.7, +3.5, +3.5 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Korea ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported worked slate in Asia, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with an 8.8% share.

In South Korea, worked slate imports increased at an average annual rate of +19.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (-2.2% per year) and the Philippines (+22.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price posted buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+12.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
