For the fourth consecutive year, the Asian cotton fabric market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -1.7% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Cotton Fabric Production in Asia
In value terms, cotton fabric production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 9.4%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Asia
Cotton fabric exports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, rising by 24% on the previous year. Total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -6.6% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cotton fabric exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 67% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and India (X tons), together constituting a 23% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cotton fabric exports from China stood at +4.2%. At the same time, India (+29.3%), Pakistan (+21.3%) and Turkey (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+5.8 p.p.), Pakistan (+5.6 p.p.) and Turkey (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR and China saw its share reduced by -3.6% and -3.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest cotton fabric supplier in Asia, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +2.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+8.4% per year) and Pakistan (+3.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (-1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of woven fabrics of cotton, when their volume increased by 20% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 36%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
Bangladesh was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 37% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Cambodia (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and China (X tons), together making up a 40% share of total imports. The following importers - Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Japan (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.
Imports into Bangladesh increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cambodia (+11.3%), Myanmar (+6.0%), Sri Lanka (+4.7%) and South Korea (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +11.3% from 2012-2021. The United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-1.6%), Vietnam (-2.2%), Japan (-2.2%), Hong Kong SAR (-5.1%) and Thailand (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Bangladesh and Cambodia increased by +11 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported woven fabrics of cotton in Asia, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 6.1% share.
In Bangladesh, cotton fabric imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+1.6% per year) and Indonesia (-3.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 6.4%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
