Flax Fabric Market Size in Asia

In 2022, the Asian flax fabric market decreased by -68.4% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption showed a significant increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, flax fabric production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 201,349%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 76% of total exports in 2022. Turkey (X tons) held a 9.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by India (8.5%). The following exporters - Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - each resulted at a 3.5% share of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% from 2015 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+123.0%), India (+110.0%), South Korea (+37.5%) and Hong Kong SAR (+28.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +123.0% from 2015-2022. While the share of China (+75 p.p.), Turkey (+8.8 p.p.) and India (+7.5 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest flax fabric supplier in Asia, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 3.9% share.

In China, flax fabric exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.5% over the period from 2015-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+0.3% per year) and Turkey (+18.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per kg in 2022, surging by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a sharp reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per kg in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per kg), while South Korea ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2015 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+34.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia

In 2022, overseas purchases of woven fabrics of flax decreased by -3.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 163,407% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, flax fabric imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 109% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the six major importers of woven fabrics of flax, namely Vietnam, Turkey, Afghanistan, Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), constituting a 4.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Japan (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +8,492.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 49% of total imports. Turkey, India, China, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong SAR, Thailand, Bangladesh and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

Among the main importing countries, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +32.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per kg, dropping by -4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 171% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per kg in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
