The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Silk fabric exports surged to X square meters in 2021, rising by 28% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country
China dominates exports structure, finishing at X square meters, which was approx. 71% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X square meters), Japan (X square meters) and India (X square meters), together committing a 19% share of total exports. South Korea (X square meters), Vietnam (X square meters) and Hong Kong SAR (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to silk fabric exports from China stood at -10.6%. At the same time, Turkey (+25.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +25.5% from 2012-2021. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Japan (-4.9%), India (-10.6%), South Korea (-14.6%) and Hong Kong SAR (-23.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+6.7 p.p.), Japan (+2.5 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Korea, China and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -3.4% and -5.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest silk fabric supplier in Asia, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 5.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at -10.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-6.7% per year) and Japan (-11.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per square meter, surging by 3.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 37%. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per square meter), while Turkey ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste was finally on the rise to reach X square meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, silk fabric imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Kyrgyzstan (X square meters) represented the key importer of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste, constituting 47% of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X square meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8.9% share, followed by Vietnam (7.3%), Japan (4.7%) and Turkey (4.6%). The following importers - Hong Kong SAR (X square meters), South Korea (X square meters), China (X square meters), Malaysia (X square meters), Sri Lanka (X square meters), India (X square meters), Myanmar (X square meters) and Iraq (X square meters) - together made up 22% of total imports.
Kyrgyzstan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste imports, with a CAGR of +120.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Myanmar (+50.1%), Sri Lanka (+11.6%) and Iraq (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Turkey (-1.8%), Vietnam (-3.9%), the United Arab Emirates (-4.9%), Japan (-8.9%), China (-9.3%), Malaysia (-10.6%), India (-14.7%), South Korea (-15.1%) and Hong Kong SAR (-17.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kyrgyzstan (+47 p.p.), Sri Lanka (+1.8 p.p.) and Myanmar (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the United Arab Emirates, China, Malaysia, Japan, India, South Korea and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -2.7%, -3.2%, -3.7%, -5.5%, -7.7% and -13.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest silk fabric importing markets in Asia were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Japan ($X), together comprising 40% of total imports. These countries were followed by Turkey, Hong Kong SAR, Sri Lanka, South Korea, India, Kyrgyzstan, China, Malaysia, Iraq and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 51%.
Among the main importing countries, Kyrgyzstan, with a CAGR of +97.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per square meter in 2021, with a decrease of -19.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 11%. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per square meter), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
