Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +72.6% against 2012 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The biggest shipments were from Japan (X tons), India (X tons) and China (X tons), together accounting for 55% of total export. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by South Korea (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 24% share of total exports. The following exporters - Thailand (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) - together made up 17% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +29.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest wrapping papers supplying countries in Asia were China ($X), Japan ($X) and India ($X), together accounting for 60% of total exports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 36%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +27.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, imports of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard in Asia expanded notably to X tons, with an increase of 9.1% on 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. China was the key importer of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard in Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 29% of total imports in 2021. Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +10.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+11.5%), Turkey (+8.5%), India (+6.3%), the United Arab Emirates (+5.7%), Pakistan (+4.2%), South Korea (+3.1%) and Thailand (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012-2021. Taiwan (Chinese) and Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.3%), Malaysia (-1.6%) and Singapore (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+12 p.p.), Turkey (+3 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -2.8% and -2.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard in Asia, comprising 24% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Turkey ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 7% share.

In China, wrapping papers imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+7.4% per year) and India (+5.2% per year).
