Yams Market Size in Asia
The Asian yams market fell modestly to $X in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Yams Production in Asia
In value terms, yams production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Japan (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of yams production, comprising approx. 76% of total volume. Moreover, yams production in Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, China (X tons), eightfold. The Philippines (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Japan was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+0.0% per year) and the Philippines (-1.5% per year).
The average yams yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 7.4%. Over the period under review, the yams yield attained the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of yams in Asia shrank modestly to X ha, stabilizing at the year before. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 1.8%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to yams production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of yams decreased by -5.4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +14.3% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, yams exports amounted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +19.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 57%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China (X tons), India (X tons) and Japan (X tons) represented roughly 85% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) - together made up 12% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +36.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest yams supplying countries in Asia were China ($X), Japan ($X) and India ($X), together accounting for 89% of total exports. Vietnam, the Philippines, Afghanistan and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.4%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +29.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 6.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 7.9% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+19.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Yams Imports
Imports in Asia
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of yams, when their volume decreased by -1.7% to X tons. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +16.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, yams imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of yams imports in 2022 were the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together amounting to 70% of total import. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), making up a 7.1% share of total imports. Japan (X tons), Qatar (X tons), Oman (X tons), Macao SAR (X tons), Kuwait (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +177.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), Japan ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 67% share of total imports. Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Qatar, Macao SAR, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
Among the main importing countries, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +166.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 5.2%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
