Stationery Market Size in Australia and Oceania

In 2022, the stationery market in Australia and Oceania increased by 1.4% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Stationery Production in Australia and Oceania

In value terms, stationery production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 68%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Australia and Oceania

In 2022, shipments abroad of articles of stationery increased by 18% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 119%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, stationery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

New Zealand represented the major exporter of articles of stationery in Australia and Oceania, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 72% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Australia (X tons), mixing up a 25% share of total exports. Fiji (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from New Zealand decreased at an average annual rate of -3.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Fiji (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Fiji emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Australia (-7.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. New Zealand (+8.4 p.p.) and Fiji (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Australia saw its share reduced by -10.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X) remains the largest stationery supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

In New Zealand, stationery exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (-14.6% per year) and Fiji (+16.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 58%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while Fiji ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Fiji (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Australia and Oceania

Stationery imports contracted slightly to X tons in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 9.6%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, stationery imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Australia (X tons) was the key importer of articles of stationery, committing 70% of total imports. New Zealand (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Papua New Guinea (5.5%). Fiji (X tons) and New Caledonia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to stationery imports into Australia stood at -4.9%. At the same time, New Zealand (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, New Zealand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +1.8% from 2012-2022. Fiji experienced a relatively flat trend pattern.
