Exports in Australia and Oceania
In 2021, overseas shipments of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations decreased by -46.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 1,089%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
New Zealand dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Australia (X tons), constituting a 9% share of total exports.
New Zealand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations exports, with a CAGR of +68.7% from 2012 to 2021. Australia (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of New Zealand increased by +84 percentage points.
In value terms, Australia ($X) emerged as the largest artificial and colloidal graphite supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Zealand ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.
In Australia, artificial and colloidal graphite exports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.0% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 152% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 153%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while New Zealand totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (-1.4%).

Imports in Australia and Oceania
In 2021, approx. X tons of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations were imported in Australia and Oceania; remaining stable against 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite imports declined modestly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Australia represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 67% of total imports. New Caledonia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by New Zealand (15%).
Australia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations imports, with a CAGR of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, New Caledonia (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. New Zealand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Australia (+8.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of New Caledonia (-2.3 p.p.) and New Zealand (-5.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations in Australia and Oceania, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Zealand ($X), with a 13% share of total imports.
In Australia, artificial and colloidal graphite imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (+0.9% per year) and New Caledonia (+3.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 9.9%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while New Caledonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
