Asbestos Market Size in Australia and Oceania

For the third year in a row, the asbestos market in Australia and Oceania recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 2.6% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption continues to indicate a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Asbestos Production in Australia and Oceania

In value terms, asbestos production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a significant decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with a decrease of -47.7% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Asbestos Imports

Imports in Australia and Oceania

In 2022, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of asbestoses, when their volume increased by 214% to X tons. Overall, imports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1,243% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asbestos imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 1,459% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Australia represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 65% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Tonga (X tons), making up a 25% share of total imports. The following importers - Papua New Guinea (X tons), Samoa (X tons) and Kiribati (X tons) - together made up 9.8% of total imports.

Australia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the asbestoses imports, with a CAGR of +102.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Samoa (+48.4%) and Tonga (+11.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Papua New Guinea (-3.5%) and Kiribati (-3.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Australia and Samoa increased by +65 and +3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest asbestos importing markets in Australia and Oceania were Kiribati ($X), Australia ($X) and Papua New Guinea ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports.

Australia, with a CAGR of +44.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -59.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 326%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kiribati ($X per ton), while Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kiribati (+21.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
