In 2022, purchases abroad of bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat increased by 23% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, bacon and ham imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Australia (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together making up 84% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Samoa (X tons), achieving a 6% share of total imports. New Caledonia (X tons) and French Polynesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by New Zealand (with a CAGR of +17.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat in Australia and Oceania, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Zealand ($X), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by New Caledonia, with a 5.3% share.
