In 2021, overseas shipments of base metal closures, stoppers, caps and lids decreased by -7.6% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, base metal closure exports reached $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Australia (X tons) was the largest exporter of base metal closures, stoppers, caps and lids, comprising 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X tons), achieving a 14% share of total exports. Papua New Guinea (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Australia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, New Zealand (+31.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest base metal closure supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Australia stood at -1.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: New Zealand (+21.5% per year) and Papua New Guinea (-5.8% per year).

The export price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 8.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while Papua New Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of base metal closures, stoppers, caps and lids increased by 27% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, base metal closure imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In 2021, Australia (X tons), New Zealand (X tons) and Papua New Guinea (X tons) was the main importer of base metal closures, stoppers, caps and lids in Australia and Oceania, comprising 93% of total import. Solomon Islands (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
