The bottled water market in Australia and Oceania expanded markedly to $X in 2022, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, exports of bottled waters in Australia and Oceania declined to X litres, shrinking by -6.4% compared with 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 140% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bottled water exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 66% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of bottled waters increased by 15% to X litres, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +26.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X litres. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bottled water imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +74.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Australia prevails in imports structure, resulting at X litres, which was approx. 70% of total imports in 2022. New Caledonia (X litres) took a 9.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by French Polynesia (4.6%). The following importers - Guam (X litres), New Zealand (X litres) and Marshall Islands (X litres) - together made up 11% of total imports.

Imports into Australia increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Marshall Islands (+16.3%), New Zealand (+13.7%), New Caledonia (+7.4%) and Guam (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Marshall Islands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +16.3% from 2012-2022. French Polynesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Australia (+3.5 p.p.), New Zealand (+2.3 p.p.) and New Caledonia (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while French Polynesia saw its share reduced by -2.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bottled waters in Australia and Oceania, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Caledonia ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by French Polynesia, with a 4.8% share.

In Australia, bottled water imports increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: New Caledonia (+5.0% per year) and French Polynesia (-2.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per litre, rising by 34% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
