In general, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 215% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sulphite wood pulp imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep reduction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Australia dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 96% of total imports in 2021. New Zealand (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Australia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) imports, with a CAGR of +23.3% from 2012 to 2021. New Zealand (-36.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Australia (+90 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while New Zealand saw its share reduced by -90% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
