Exports in Australia and Oceania
After two years of decline, shipments abroad of files, rasps and similar tools increased by 50% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, files and rasps exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 53%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Australia was the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which recorded 62% of total exports. Fiji (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by New Zealand (17%). Vanuatu (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Australia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vanuatu (+27.6%) and New Zealand (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vanuatu emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +27.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Fiji (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. New Zealand (+7.7 p.p.) and Vanuatu (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Fiji saw its share reduced by -10.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest files and rasps supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Fiji, with a 2.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Australia totaled -5.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: New Zealand (+6.5% per year) and Fiji (-5.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 39% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per unit), while Fiji ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Australia and Oceania
In 2022, overseas purchases of files, rasps and similar tools increased by 30% to X units, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, files and rasps imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Australia represented the main importer of files, rasps and similar tools in Australia and Oceania, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was approx. 59% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Papua New Guinea (X units), New Zealand (X units) and Fiji (X units), together mixing up a 36% share of total imports. French Polynesia (X units) held a little share of total imports.
Imports into Australia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, French Polynesia (+14.6%), Papua New Guinea (+8.4%), New Zealand (+6.3%) and Fiji (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, French Polynesia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +14.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Papua New Guinea (+9.2 p.p.), New Zealand (+4.6 p.p.), Fiji (+1.7 p.p.) and French Polynesia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Australia (-17.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported files, rasps and similar tools in Australia and Oceania, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Papua New Guinea, with an 8.7% share.
In Australia, files and rasps imports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: New Zealand (+2.6% per year) and Papua New Guinea (+6.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -9.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, files and rasps import price decreased by -12.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 54%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per unit), while Papua New Guinea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
