Ginger Market Size in Australia and Oceania

In 2022, the ginger market in Australia and Oceania decreased by -8.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Ginger Production in Australia and Oceania

In value terms, ginger production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 172%. The country with the largest volume of ginger production was Fiji (X tons), accounting for 99.9% of total volume.

The average ginger yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 289% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ginger exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 280% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Fiji dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X tons) and Australia (X tons), together generating a 14% share of total exports.

Exports from Fiji decreased at an average annual rate of -2.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, New Zealand (+13.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, New Zealand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +13.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Australia (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Fiji ($X) remains the largest ginger supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 23% share of total exports.

In Fiji, ginger exports decreased by an average annual rate of -4.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+2.2% per year) and New Zealand (+14.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +79.6% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, ginger imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

New Zealand (X tons) and Australia (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together mixing up 97% of total imports. New Caledonia (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
