Exports in Australia and Oceania

In 2021, approx. X tons of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers were exported in Australia and Oceania; growing by 154% compared with 2020. Overall, exports saw a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 220% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 210% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Australia dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X tons), constituting an 8.6% share of total exports.

Australia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers exports, with a CAGR of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021. New Zealand (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Australia (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while New Zealand saw its share reduced by -9.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest hairpin supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

In Australia, hairpin exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -56.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 155%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while Australia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+2.8%).

In 2021, purchases abroad of hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hairpin imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Australia dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 74% of total imports in 2021. New Zealand (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Fiji (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 15% share of total imports. French Polynesia (X tons), Palau (X tons) and Papua New Guinea (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Australia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Palau (+33.4%), Papua New Guinea (+32.0%), Fiji (+6.5%) and French Polynesia (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Palau emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +33.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, New Zealand (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Fiji, Palau and Papua New Guinea increased by +2.8, +2.1 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hairpins, curling pins, curling grips and hair-curlers in Australia and Oceania, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Zealand ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by French Polynesia, with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Australia totaled +2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: New Zealand (-2.2% per year) and French Polynesia (+1.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per ton, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 60%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while Palau ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
