In 2022, exports of industrial roundwood in Australia and Oceania reduced to X cubic meters, falling by -12.3% against the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -18.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, industrial roundwood exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +32.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
New Zealand dominates exports structure, reaching X cubic meters, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Papua New Guinea (X cubic meters), creating a 6.9% share of total exports. The following exporters - Solomon Islands (X cubic meters) and Australia (X cubic meters) - together made up 5.8% of total exports.
Exports from New Zealand increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Solomon Islands (+8.4%) and Papua New Guinea (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Solomon Islands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +8.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Australia (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of New Zealand and Solomon Islands increased by +5.1 and +3.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, New Zealand ($X) remains the largest industrial roundwood supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Papua New Guinea ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Solomon Islands, with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in New Zealand amounted to +9.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Papua New Guinea (-0.4% per year) and Solomon Islands (+12.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 27% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Solomon Islands ($X per cubic meter), while Australia ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of industrial roundwood increased by 46% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, industrial roundwood imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Australia prevails in imports structure, amounting to X cubic meters, which was approx. 68% of total imports in 2022. Fiji (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8.6% share, followed by New Caledonia (5%). New Zealand (X cubic meters), Marshall Islands (X cubic meters), Tonga (X cubic meters) and Samoa (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Australia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the industrial roundwood imports, with a CAGR of +31.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, New Caledonia (+10.7%), Marshall Islands (+7.8%) and Samoa (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, New Zealand (-13.1%), Fiji (-14.4%) and Tonga (-25.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Australia (+65 p.p.), New Caledonia (+3.8 p.p.), Marshall Islands (+2.4 p.p.) and Samoa (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga saw its share reduced by -7.1%, -19.1% and -33.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported industrial roundwood in Australia and Oceania, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Fiji ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Marshall Islands, with a 3.4% share.
In Australia, industrial roundwood imports increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Fiji (-6.0% per year) and Marshall Islands (+8.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per cubic meter, growing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 29%.
