The maize market in Australia and Oceania contracted to $X in 2022, declining by -2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Papua New Guinea was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Australia (+2.3% per year) and New Zealand (-10.5% per year).

The average maize yield declined modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -1.8% on the year before. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 8.8%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the maize yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 37%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, maize exports stood at $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +46.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 33%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Australia represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Fiji (X tons), comprising a 16% share of total exports. New Zealand (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Australia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the maize (green) exports, with a CAGR of +5.7% from 2012 to 2022. Fiji experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. New Zealand (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Fiji (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while New Zealand and Australia saw its share reduced by -7.3% and -9.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest maize supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Fiji ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In 2022, the amount of maize (green) imported in Australia and Oceania fell to X tons, shrinking by -13.5% on the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +25.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 80%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

New Zealand was the largest importer of maize (green) in Australia and Oceania, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 49% of total imports in 2022. Australia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Papua New Guinea (11%), New Caledonia (7.7%), Marshall Islands (5.5%) and French Polynesia (4.5%). Guam (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

New Zealand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of maize (green). At the same time, Marshall Islands (+44.2%), Papua New Guinea (+40.4%), Guam (+11.0%), New Caledonia (+9.7%) and French Polynesia (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Marshall Islands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +44.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Australia (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, New Caledonia and Guam increased by +10, +5.3, +3.4 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.
