Manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports shrank remarkably to X tons in 2021, declining by -75.7% compared with the previous year. In general, exports showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 951% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,333% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In 2021, Australia (X tons) represented the largest exporter of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences, making up 57% of total exports. Fiji (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Samoa (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 39% share of total exports. New Zealand (X kg) held a relatively small share of total exports.

In value terms, the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences supplying countries in Australia and Oceania were Australia ($X), Fiji ($X) and Samoa ($X), together comprising 96% of total exports.

Australia, with a CAGR of +5.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2021, the export price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per ton, rising by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a moderate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 92% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Fiji ($X per ton), while Samoa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, imports of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences in Australia and Oceania soared to X tons, increasing by 49% on 2020. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Australia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Papua New Guinea increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kiribati (+42.7%), Solomon Islands (+38.1%) and Fiji (+22.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kiribati emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +42.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Samoa (-2.7%) and Australia (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Papua New Guinea (+22 p.p.), Solomon Islands (+19 p.p.), Kiribati (+7.9 p.p.) and Fiji (+4.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Samoa and Australia saw its share reduced by -1.5% and -2.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Papua New Guinea ($X), Kiribati ($X) and Solomon Islands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total imports.

Kiribati, with a CAGR of +46.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -19.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kiribati ($X per ton), while Solomon Islands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
