In 2021, the MDF market in Australia and Oceania was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. In value terms, MDF production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Australia and Oceania
MDF exports skyrocketed to X cubic meters in 2021, surging by 98% against the year before. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, MDF exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
New Zealand dominates exports structure, amounting to X cubic meters, which was near 97% of total exports in 2021. Australia (X cubic meters) held a minor share of total exports.
New Zealand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the MDF exports, with a CAGR of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021. Australia (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of New Zealand increased by +7.7 percentage points.
In value terms, New Zealand ($X) remains the largest MDF supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in New Zealand totaled +4.7%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per cubic meter, falling by -6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 17%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per cubic meter), while New Zealand totaled $X per cubic meter.

Imports in Australia and Oceania
In 2021, purchases abroad of MDF was finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, MDF imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Australia was the largest importing country with an import of about X cubic meters, which reached 77% of total imports. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X cubic meters), constituting an 18% share of total imports. Fiji (X cubic meters) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into Australia increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, New Zealand (+22.2%) and Fiji (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, New Zealand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +22.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of New Zealand (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Australia (-6.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported MDF in Australia and Oceania, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Zealand ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Australia stood at +7.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (+17.8% per year) and Fiji (+2.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per cubic meter, surging by 2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 3.6%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per cubic meter), while Fiji ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
