In 2021, the MDF market in Australia and Oceania was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

New Zealand dominates exports structure, amounting to X cubic meters, which was near 97% of total exports in 2021. Australia (X cubic meters) held a minor share of total exports.

New Zealand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the MDF exports, with a CAGR of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021. Australia (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of New Zealand increased by +7.7 percentage points.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X) remains the largest MDF supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per cubic meter, falling by -6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 17%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. In 2021, purchases abroad of MDF was finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, MDF imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Australia was the largest importing country with an import of about X cubic meters, which reached 77% of total imports. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X cubic meters), constituting an 18% share of total imports. Fiji (X cubic meters) took a little share of total imports.

In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported MDF in Australia and Oceania, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Zealand ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.
