For the fourth year in a row, Australia and Oceania recorded decline in overseas purchases of molasses, which decreased by -51.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 2,564%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, molasse imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 980% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Australia was the key importer of molasses in Australia and Oceania, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 67% of total imports in 2022. Solomon Islands (X tons) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by French Polynesia (9.8%) and New Zealand (6.9%). New Caledonia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to molasse imports into Australia stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Solomon Islands (+31.7%), French Polynesia (+11.8%) and New Zealand (+8.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, New Caledonia (-17.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Australia (+27 p.p.), Solomon Islands (+9.1 p.p.), French Polynesia (+5 p.p.) and New Zealand (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while New Caledonia saw its share reduced by -38.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported molasses in Australia and Oceania, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by French Polynesia, with an 8.6% share.

In Australia, molasse imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (+8.8% per year) and French Polynesia (+10.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -15.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 119%.
