In 2021, overseas shipments of natural bitumen and asphalt were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 1,894% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, natural bitumen and asphalt exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 970% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

New Zealand (X tons) and Fiji (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Australia (X tons), making up a 7% share of total exports. Papua New Guinea (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Papua New Guinea (with a CAGR of +45.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Fiji ($X), New Zealand ($X) and Australia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 93% of total exports.

New Zealand, with a CAGR of +28.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -12.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($X per ton), while New Zealand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Fiji (-2.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of natural bitumen and asphalt were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 347%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, natural bitumen and asphalt imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, faced a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 368% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Papua New Guinea was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 38% of total imports. New Zealand (X tons) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Guam (11%), Fiji (9.6%) and Marshall Islands (7.1%). Australia (X tons) and Niue (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Niue (with a CAGR of +71.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest natural bitumen and asphalt importing markets in Australia and Oceania were Papua New Guinea ($X), New Zealand ($X) and Australia ($X), together comprising 65% of total imports. These countries were followed by Guam, Fiji, Marshall Islands and Niue, which together accounted for a further 27%.

Among the main importing countries, Niue, with a CAGR of +36.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while Marshall Islands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
