The papaya market in Australia and Oceania reached $X in 2022, growing by 3.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption posted strong growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Papaya Production in Australia and Oceania

In 2022, approx. X tons of papayas were exported in Australia and Oceania; shrinking by -30.2% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 120% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, papaya exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Fiji prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2022. Australia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
Fiji was also the fastest-growing in terms of the papayas exports, with a CAGR of -4.5% from 2012 to 2022. Australia (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Australia (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Fiji saw its share reduced by -4.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Fiji ($X) remains the largest papaya supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Fiji was relatively modest.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.5% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. In 2022, overseas purchases of papayas increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, papaya imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 53%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the one major importers of papayas, namely New Zealand, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
New Zealand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the papayas imports, with a CAGR of -1.8% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of New Zealand (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, New Zealand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported papayas in Australia and Oceania.
