Exports by Country

New Zealand represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which finished at 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Australia (X units), mixing up a 21% share of total exports. Fiji (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

New Zealand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks exports, with a CAGR of +17.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Australia (+13.0%) and Fiji (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. New Zealand (+7.6 p.p.) and Fiji (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Australia saw its share reduced by -7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X) remains the largest drawing chalk supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in New Zealand totaled +16.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+13.7% per year) and Fiji (-7.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 45% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per unit), while Fiji ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks increased by 59% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +74.4% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, drawing chalk imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +72.6% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Australia represented the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which recorded 74% of total imports. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X units) and Papua New Guinea (X units), together creating a 22% share of total imports. Fiji (X units) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to drawing chalk imports into Australia stood at +3.7%. At the same time, Fiji (+16.8%) and New Zealand (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Fiji emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +16.8% from 2012-2021. Papua New Guinea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of New Zealand (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Australia (-2.5 p.p.) and Papua New Guinea (-2.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks in Australia and Oceania, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Papua New Guinea, with a 4.3% share.

In Australia, drawing chalk imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: New Zealand (+8.1% per year) and Papua New Guinea (+3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per unit in 2021, dropping by -20.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
