Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

The shipments of the two major exporters of primary cells and batteries, namely New Zealand and Australia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest primary cell and battery supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Zealand ($X), with an 8.1% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 6.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Australia (X units) was the major importer of primary cells and batteries, generating 60% of total imports. Papua New Guinea (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by New Zealand (X units). All these countries together took approx. 36% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to primary cell and battery imports into Australia stood at +3.5%. At the same time, Papua New Guinea (+10.3%) and New Zealand (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Papua New Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +10.3% from 2012-2022. Papua New Guinea (+9.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Australia saw its share reduced by -8.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported primary cells and batteries in Australia and Oceania, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Australia amounted to +2.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Zealand (+3.7% per year) and Papua New Guinea (+3.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per unit), while Papua New Guinea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
