The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -18.2% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +46.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 51%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

The biggest shipments were from New Zealand (X cubic meters), together reaching 99% of total export.

New Zealand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the roundwood (coniferous) exports, with a CAGR of +4.8% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of New Zealand (+8.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X) also remains the largest coniferous roundwood supplier in Australia and Oceania.

In 2022, purchases abroad of roundwood (coniferous) increased by 56% to X cubic meters, rising for the fourth consecutive year after six years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 115%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Australia prevails in imports structure, reaching X cubic meters, which was approx. 78% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by New Caledonia (X cubic meters), comprising a 6.9% share of total imports. Tonga (X cubic meters), New Zealand (X cubic meters), French Polynesia (X cubic meters) and Samoa (X cubic meters) took a minor share of total imports.

The second position in the ranking was held by New Caledonia ($X), with a 4.7% share of total imports. It was followed by French Polynesia, with a 2.4% share.

In Australia, coniferous roundwood imports expanded at an average annual rate of +31.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: New Caledonia (-2.6% per year) and French Polynesia (+24.8% per year).
