Exports in Australia and Oceania

For the third year in a row, Australia and Oceania recorded decline in overseas shipments of slag wool, rock wool and similar mineral wools and mixtures, which decreased by -28.3% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 201% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mineral wool exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 88%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

New Zealand was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Australia (X tons), making up a 20% share of total exports.

New Zealand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the slag wool, rock wool and similar mineral wools and mixtures exports, with a CAGR of +41.9% from 2012 to 2021. Australia (-25.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of New Zealand (+78 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Australia (-78.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X) emerged as the largest mineral wool supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

The export price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, mineral wool export price increased by +129.6% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 55%. In 2021, supplies from abroad of slag wool, rock wool and similar mineral wools and mixtures was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mineral wool imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Australia represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 68% of total imports. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X tons), making up a 27% share of total imports. New Caledonia (X tons) and Papua New Guinea (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to mineral wool imports into Australia stood at +5.3%. At the same time, New Zealand (+12.6%), Papua New Guinea (+1.7%) and New Caledonia (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, New Zealand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2012-2021. The import price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Caledonia ($X per ton), while Papua New Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
