Exports in Australia and Oceania
In 2021, overseas shipments of stranded wire, ropes and cables were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, stranded wire exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild contraction. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Australia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X tons), achieving a 6.5% share of total exports.
Australia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of stranded wire, ropes and cables. New Zealand (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Australia (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of New Zealand (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest stranded wire supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 6.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Australia was relatively modest.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while New Zealand totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+0.1%).

Imports in Australia and Oceania
In 2021, supplies from abroad of stranded wire, ropes and cables increased by 6.4% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -43.4% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, stranded wire imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Australia represented the major importer of stranded wire, ropes and cables in Australia and Oceania, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 80% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X tons), comprising a 12% share of total imports. Papua New Guinea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to stranded wire imports into Australia stood at +1.3%. At the same time, New Zealand (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, New Zealand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +2.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Papua New Guinea (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Papua New Guinea decreased by -3.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported stranded wire, ropes and cables in Australia and Oceania, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Zealand ($X), with a 13% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Australia was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: New Zealand (+1.7% per year) and Papua New Guinea (-4.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 31%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($X per ton), while Australia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Papua New Guinea (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
