In 2022, the sulphur market in Australia and Oceania decreased by -34.8% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed mild growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In 2022, the amount of sulphur exported in Australia and Oceania declined rapidly to X tons, shrinking by -77.4% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 1,697%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sulphur exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 1,062%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Australia was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tokelau (X tons), comprising a 27% share of total exports.
Australia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sulphur exports, with a CAGR of +10.5% from 2012 to 2022. Tokelau experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tokelau increased by +27 percentage points.
In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest sulphur supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tokelau ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Australia amounted to +3.7%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 132% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 180% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while Tokelau stood at $X per ton.

Sulphur Imports
Imports in Australia and Oceania
In 2022, supplies from abroad of sulphur decreased by -67.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 159%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, sulphur imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 175%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Australia was the major importer of sulphur in Australia and Oceania, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 67% of total imports in 2022. New Caledonia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by New Zealand (X tons). All these countries together took near 33% share of total imports.
Imports into Australia decreased at an average annual rate of -1.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, New Caledonia (+14.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, New Caledonia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012-2022. New Zealand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of New Caledonia increased by +15 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sulphur in Australia and Oceania, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by New Zealand ($X), with an 18% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Australia amounted to +3.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: New Zealand (+3.8% per year) and New Caledonia (+6.0% per year).
