The unmanufactured tobacco market in Australia and Oceania skyrocketed to $X in 2022, growing by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a precipitous descent. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Production in Australia and Oceania

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 310%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were New Zealand (X tons), Australia (X tons) and Fiji (X tons), together comprising 94% of total production. Samoa and Solomon Islands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.7%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Samoa (with a CAGR of +0.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the production figures.

The average unmanufactured tobacco yield skyrocketed to X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 17% on the year before. In general, the yield saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by 103% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the unmanufactured tobacco yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of tobacco (unmanufactured) production in Australia and Oceania contracted to X ha, remaining stable against 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 3%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to unmanufactured tobacco production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Australia and Oceania

In 2022, approx. X tons of tobacco (unmanufactured) were exported in Australia and Oceania; rising by 29% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 4,712%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 2,459% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from New Zealand (X tons), together finishing at 100% of total export.

New Zealand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tobacco (unmanufactured) exports, with a CAGR of +261.6% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of New Zealand increased by +100 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X) also remains the largest unmanufactured tobacco supplier in Australia and Oceania.

In New Zealand, unmanufactured tobacco exports expanded at an average annual rate of +182.0% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Australia and Oceania stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -6.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 491%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for New Zealand.

In 2022, purchases abroad of tobacco (unmanufactured) increased by 158% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a dramatic downturn. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a dramatic contraction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Solomon Islands was the major importer of tobacco (unmanufactured) in Australia and Oceania, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 82% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Papua New Guinea (X tons), generating an 11% share of total imports. Micronesia (X tons), Marshall Islands (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Solomon Islands was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tobacco (unmanufactured) imports, with a CAGR of +57.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Marshall Islands (+15.2%) and Micronesia (+14.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Papua New Guinea (-14.6%) and New Zealand (-40.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Solomon Islands (+82 p.p.), Papua New Guinea (+5.3 p.p.), Micronesia (+3 p.p.) and Marshall Islands (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while New Zealand saw its share reduced by -33.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Solomon Islands ($X), Papua New Guinea ($X) and New Zealand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 93% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Solomon Islands, with a CAGR of +37.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Australia and Oceania amounted to $X per ton, waning by -24.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 105% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while Micronesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
