In 2022, the wood chips and particles market in Australia and Oceania decreased by -43.6% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after five years of growth. In general, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, exports saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 143% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood chips and particles exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +81.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Australia dominates exports structure, amounting to X cubic meters, which was near 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X cubic meters), creating a 7.9% share of total exports. Fiji (X cubic meters) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Australia increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Fiji (+26.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Fiji emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +26.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, New Zealand (-7.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Australia and Fiji increased by +23 and +2.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest wood chips and particles supplier in Australia and Oceania, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports.

In Australia, wood chips and particles exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: New Zealand (+2.0% per year) and Fiji (+4.4% per year).

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of wood chips and particles decreased by -4.4% to X cubic meters in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 51%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

In value terms, wood chips and particles imports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Australia (X cubic meters) represented the main importer of wood chips and particles, creating 56% of total imports. Fiji (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 26% share, followed by New Zealand (8.2%) and Samoa (7.6%).

Imports into Australia increased at an average annual rate of +11.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Fiji (+124.5%), Samoa (+23.7%) and New Zealand (+13.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Fiji emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Australia and Oceania, with a CAGR of +124.5% from 2012-2022. Fiji (+26 p.p.) and Samoa (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while New Zealand and Australia saw its share reduced by -1.8% and -23.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood chips and particles in Australia and Oceania, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Fiji ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by New Zealand, with a 6.5% share.

In Australia, wood chips and particles imports increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Fiji (+169.0% per year) and New Zealand (+9.1% per year).
